I hope this thread doesn't turn into a word play on Depeche Mode song titles. That would be useless.

Have you heard the song "John the Revelator"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VaB1psXTjS4
Are the portraying John the Baptist in a negative light? Or any they calling George Bush, John the Baptist? I like the song, but I was never sure what they meant in their lyrics.

Saw them live on the Music for the Masses tour in the later 80's.
Some of their stuff is enjoyable, although overall their music seems very walk around miserably in it's feel.
It works and it works for them well. I wouldn't run out and buy a CD today, but I don't mind hearing their songs.

My fav band of all time. Been with them since the 80's.....
The song John the Revelator is about the author of the book of revelations... you know... in that bible book.

Not the most incredible band ever but definatly a massive influence to british electronica.
Also one of the more credible bands to come from the 'New Romantic' scene/shite we had to endure in the 80's and pretty sure they'd wish to to be dissasociated from it.
Didn't they all turn into raging skag heads?
Not the best drug for creativity methinks.
Still made a few good tunes on the way.....

what do you think 'Never let me down again' is about?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W0f8HHRpSSE
anyway, i reckon heroin has been responsible for some great tunes (in both ways, both influence and regret / dislike)..me and some friends put together a compilation of the best heroin related tunes and its a corker.
100% Horse Anthems
DM : never let me down again
Neil Young : Needle and the damage done
Bert Jansch : Needle of death
Lynrd Skynrd : The needle and the spoon
Stranglers : Golden Brown
Ragga Twins : Wipe the needle
Velvet Underground : Heroin
of course, there are hundreds of other smack related tunes.
and lets not forget jazz, coltrane, miles, charlie parker, billie holiday. all rode the horse at some point or another.
3 cheers for Big Harry!
p.s. kids dont do heroin its bad. mmkay.

they broke up and went their seperate ways after the songs of love and devotion album, then after a short hiatus came back and did an awesome album Ultra. Then Dave Gahan did some solo stuff. All because of the drugs. The drugs darn it!

I'm really surprised more bands haven't tried to sound like them, or maybe their have been and they just failed at it. It seems nowadays there has to be no less than 5 bands/artists that all sound the same, equally successful and equally interchangible.

i used to totally love them from about 84 - 87, saw them live in 86 roundabout the black celebration album, had a depeche mode sweatshirt, had my hair dyed black and styled like dave gahan and had posters on my wall of them all. which with hindsight was extremely teenage gay crush ish.
dont listen to them much at all now, if ever, though i still got all my original singles, lp's and cassettes. part of my musical heritage
them and soft cell, yazoo, dead or alive, omd and er...our daughter's wedding. and a bit of spandau ballet, but not much
