imac = no seconday monitor?
i went and took a peek at them at best buy. i always just assumed they had a monitor port, but i didnt see one.

You can definitely drive a second monitor on an iMac. See the "mini DVI" port on the specs page: http://www.apple.com/imac/specs/
I set one up at my dad's shop - he uses the regular iMac monitor for work, while at the same time a Quartz Composition runs on a plasma TV (for ads and stuff). You can get all sorts of adapters and whatnot, for hooking up to HDMI or whatever you need.

Apple mini-DV adapter
You'll need one of these. Make sure you get the exact right one for your model iMac and type of monitor!
