Hi

I've been using the apple 23" display in a studio and now my crappy 15" display is depressing. Of course I'd like one of those but they are mighty expensive.

I'm using a G5 mac and am after the biggest, best quality, cheapest solution !

Any recommendations?

Just get the Apple display. Seriously. Nothing will quite compare to it... *speaks from experience*

However, if you really are on a budget, there are some nice 20" LG screens that will run you about £200 (tops). Their quality is awesome, too.

The apple displays have the worst response time out of any monitors I've ever seen...

If you don't game, I guess that's not much of an issue. But yeah, ack!

i got one of these for use with my macbook, they're very nice and don't break the bank.

Can't beat it for the price

If you're just using it for music production then go out and buy the biggest and cheapest widescreen TFT you can find. Unless you're going to be watching high quality movies, playing games or doing video / graphics work then the display quality isn't an issue.

I bought the cheapest 19" I could find a year ago and its been perfect.

i dunno about getting the biggest and cheapest.... 19" isn't that big these days, and at a decent resolution the pixels are still pretty small so even a cheaper 19" can look ok...

a cheapo 22" or bigger can look pretty crappy compared to a decent screen, and since you are used to an Apple display you may be seriously disappointed...

you should try and compare some side-by-side as the picture quality can vary really quite a lot between monitors, even just for everyday shit.... and when you're working with a zillion tiny controls it really does make a difference...

Samsung are a good bet, generally good quality & warranty...

a 22" at 1680x1050 is a pretty sweet size, and about the best value for money at moment... if you are going larger then you probably want to look for a higher res as well...

there are some good review/comparison sites on the net if you trawl around a bit... hard to say without knowing how much credit you are prepared to part with...

We have two systems here at home. I'm running dual 22" @ 1680*1050, and our "home" system is one 24" Fujitsu Siemens Scaleoview @ 1920*1200.

Both solutions are SO fucking cheap right now that you really should buy if you're looking to improve your screen situation.

and no, the Apple Displays AREN'T the best out there*... don't believe the hype.



*=unless perhaps you're looking for a 30" solution.. .then the market isn't nearly as saturated right now.

The screen is actually the worst thing in my iMac!
Apple displays are nowhere near the top. You would think otherwise because they are so darn expensive..

For size vs price, you can't beat the Dell monitors.

Just got myself a 24" Dell widescreen LCD for $350.

the cheapest US prices I've seen for 24" models is below 300, actually...

You do need to check the resolution and pixel size and that they're compatible with your computer, but other than that its hard to go wrong with a cheap display.

For using Live or any music software I refuse to believe an Apple display could ever make that much of a difference, or at least a big enough difference to justify the price.

Though I do tend to stick to displays that have got good reviews on Amazon, Dabs or wherever I'm buying it from. Which kind of takes the risk out of it.

i wasn't recommending Apple displays, i was saying that the cheapest displays, especially above 19", can look very poor compared to a good display (which might only cost $50 more)...
