Just curious. I have only ever had Live LE. Sometimes I see other DAWS in members sig's. What would the next best thing to Live be?

MOTU Digital Performer is pretty good I think.

maxMSP 5.0

- sometimes I wish I *didn't* have Live, then I'd finally finish my performance patch - out of need!

In terms of straight lineal recording..
Probably any of the others are an alternative to live.
For example i still use Logic to do some things in,, but less and less...
Lives session view and the method of work flow that it inspires is fairly unique.
Digital Performer has a kinda-sorta similar aspect to it in so far as you can use one function of it to create loops on the fly.. you can then have DP put those loops into
the arrange page.. I can't remember what MOTU calls this and I've only seen this working once so i might have it all wrong, but at the time i was mighty impressed and had i not already been a logic user i would have grabbed DP right away..
I think there might be a cake walk product that also has a very simple version of the session page that allowes you to create very rough arrangements using a matrix like set up that you can then record as a performance...
One of the limitations you are going to find is your PC as this means both Logic and DP are not an option for you unless you want to buy a new computer.

If your on a budget you could maybe take a look at Energy XT or Reaper...
Sonar seems to get a lot of respect.. but i haven't even seen it so i can't comment more on that.
I've always been a bit off on Cubase.
PT might be worth a look.. there is a lot of hype that surrounds this platform based mostly on use more that that it is the best.. it does however have some very cool time saving features and a very straight forward and almost "Tape" based traditional work flow..

You might even want to look out side the box and start checking out some of the roland VS work stations.. these might be very cool option if your not doing a lot of MIDI work.. http://www.rolandus.com/products/produc ... rentId=110 The VS880 was one of my first toys and i had a lot of fun on that bad boy...

What's your favourite music, not counting Pink Floyd.

renoise is excellent to me, it's a fast production tool and without live I would probably work on this one.

If you want the Session view type functionality,

Project 5 ...

If you want traditional linear sequencers....well there are tonnes, all have their advantages and disadvantages

if i couldnt't use live i would want a hardware setup.

most likely an MPC

edit....

hell i still would like to get an MPC 500
i could take it to work and make beats, collect samples
and have another back up plan if the computer fails at a show.
currently we just play acoustic.. but it be cool to have a few songs ready to go
on the MPC too
