external harddrive

Since I use PT's, I have always recorded to an external harddrive. Is this correct for Live? I know it takes a long time to save a session in Live, in PT's it just takes a few seconds.
i have all my stuff on an external, i never thought of saving a session as taking "a long time"
i use a firewire external hd, some generic brand that was cheapest at fry's.
