I'm still on my policy of 100% Ableton avoiding to use other than the included synths and fx that comes with Ableton, with the exception of a couple of mastering VSTs. Also no samples was used here with the exception of what I'd create (my voice mainly). Allmost all is generated with Ableton's Operators and Analogs and a lot of Abletons fx, from the main kick to the hats and all that is in the middle.

about i-producer, djvox is out of business and I'm haven't time to deal with formating and corrections, anyway I'm gigging a lot and my free time is not enough to keep the quality of the first two editions, anyway I'll continue with the Live video series as soon as I have a lil free time

thanks for your comment, now about the tips:

- Get the most of your time.
- Is better to know the 110% of a few than the 20% of a lot.
- Read completely at least one time your gear/software manuals.
- Plant a tree, have a son, build your library, reuse and recycle your own stuff.
- Work on pre-master, brick wall limit your master track to be closer to the final rms avoiding unwanted changes.
- Remember that emotional quality goes first than audio quality, don't be obsessed, and don't be afraid of some dusty and dirty content.
- fx processing and modulating are essential to get an interesting sound, combine that with "follow action" and plugins that produce random results (in special the MIDI ones).
- Is better to have a few elements with a lot of personality and autonomy than a lot of tracks with sterile samples on it.

How do you do this using only live plugins? Been trying with the saturator, bu i can't get the settings right for it to brickwall without distorting.

As I said on my post I use a couple of non Ableton mastering VSTs:

About Saturator, it could brickwall limit but it will add harmonics by distortion. You can achieve good results with the Ableton Compressor using the right settings, I used this approach to avoid cliping on live shows:

On Master Track:


Ableton Compressor

EF = Peak

LookAhead = 10ms...
... and Attack = 0.01 (needed to stop fast transients)

Ratio = inf

Model = FF1 (I think this a bit more firm and faster than FF2)

Threshold = -3dB

Rel= 0.20 (as shorter the release as higher the RMS)


Then an Ableton Saturator (analog curve) after the compressor to act as a final limiter (now without risks of noticeably distort the signal).


A very good free limiter plug-in you can use is W1 Limiter, is supposed to be a Waves L1 Ultramaximizer clone: http://www.yohng.com/w1limit.html

And finally if you are rich and don't care about an extra latency, Waves are the choice.

Will give a go at those settings for our liveset. Hope all is good for you on the music side of life as well as on others. Looking toward to hearing more tracks from you. And maybe some new tips? but only after some new tracks please.
