Hi guys, I just put Live 7.0.9 onto a new computer but it's behaving strangely. whenever I click on anything that's not Live then click back on live, it takes some moments before Live starts responding again. I'm always clicking on my RME mixer & other stuff, so waiting 20 seconds for Live to respond again is a pain. This new Board is an Asus PK5 EPU. It's the P35 chipset. E8400 3GHZ 6mb L2 Cache Processor. XP SP3. Live 7.07 Behaves the same. Live 7.0.2 seems to work fine. Is this an issue anyone's heard of?. I didn't keep a copy of live 7.0.3 or 7.0.5. Is there any way I can get a copy of these versions to test them? Cheers, Dami Summers.

I am running it (7.0.x->7.0.9) on a Gigabyte P35 chipset w/XP Pro SP3 and haven't seen any problems. I just installed the latest yesterday and putzed with it a short bit but I wasn't quite doing what you were doing. Responded fine as far as I can tell.

E6850 oc'd to 3.6Ghz 4Gb Dominator memory.

Thanks for the info. It may have something to do with the RME Fireface, I've been talking to support & they say that something was changed but I haven't got to the bottom of it> Cheers Dami.

Well I am not sure what my chipset is - but I am running SP3 on my brand new PC with NO audio interfaces at all.

I too am getting dramatic sluggishness when switching into Live (7.0.9) - I also noticed this with 7.0.7 as well the other week although it was intermittent now it is reproducible.

No MIDI interfaces or audio interfaces - everything seems to be running fine - I do have AVG installed but it has never caused me any issues.

This "delay" is only when switching into Live (using Alt-Tab or clicking on Live in the Task Bar) - switching into other programs is very responsive.

Any comments/advice appreciated.

Yeh, thats exactly the same issue. When did you buy your computer? Who's the motherboard by? I don't think it's to do with SP3 cause it worked fine on my old machine. Support seem to know something about this cause they sent me this.......

could you please try to trash the 'preferences.cfg' file of 7.0.9 which
can be found here:

c:/documents and settings/[your username]/application data/ableton/live
7.0.9/preferences/preferences.cfg

Note that on some Windows systems the application data folder is hidden
by default. Here is what you have to do to make it visible:

1. Launch Windows Explorer.
2. Select 'Tools -> Folder Options -> View'.
3. Check 'Show hidden files and folders'.

It works for me until I load a song. Then it's back. Good luck.

My PC is brand new:

ASUS P5K Pro Intel P35 Chips MB - Intel CPU Q9300 Quad Core.

I am not in front of that PC right now - but will try that and advise if that does anything for me.

It could be m/board/CPU related - my other PC (single processor) is running SP3 and that seems fine with 7.0.7...

Why do you ask this? Maybe I've missed your point, but i'm not having any problems with dropouts. The computer works amazingly with Live 7.0.3 but with 7.0.5 up, this problem occurs.

sorry, my post was a bit short. I have no explanation for the fact that different live 7 versions react individually, maybe some are more prone to certain hardware problems. high dpc latency or spikes don't necessarily translate to drop outs. so the latency tester would be a minimum effort tool to rule out certain roots of problems, why not just give it try?

In case you allready did that and it turned out all good: sorry, I have no other idea how or where to continue the search for the cause of your specific issue besides checking for the swapping of memory. Look at the taskmanager while switching around and see if the virtual memory size changes and if the memory allocations of the applications change by big amounts.

How much ram do you have installed?

You could email the ableton support for the older version installers.

Im in Damian's situation. no change of hardware at all. Have been running Live for years and 7.0.3 for months - stable as.

Then last night went straight frmo 7.0.3 to 7.0.9 and now have this weird 20 second hanging thing where Live just freezes then eventually comes back (then freezes again).

No idea what causes it yet, but I dont think the Motherboard idea (as put forward by others) is to blame. To me its clearly to do with something that changed between 7.0.3 and 7.0.9.

OK - I have 2 PC's - both running SP3 - my single core 2.4ghz P4 works fine, my new QuadCore / chipset / m.board is the one with the "delay". Live 7.0.9 on both.

I looked at what is installed (software wise) and the only thing that I can pull is AVG - I have that on both PC's and it works fine on the P4. The people who built both my PC's know I do audio stuff and configure things for best stability/speed.

The only other thing I can think of is that I have a 1TB HDD (not my System Drive) split into 4 partitions - one of those partitions houses my Live library...could that be a problem?

Do others have their Live lib on a seperate HDD...?

i only have a p4 3.2ghz with 2 gig running xp with no problems whatsoever with live...

Well - color me embarrased!!

Unchecked the "allow mutliple instances" and umm the problem has gone!!

Turn it on and the problem comes back.

Not sure how it got ticked in the first place!

Not sure if others with the "delay" problem have checked that?

Anyhow - seems to be working just fine.

OK - after using it for a few hours (with "multiple instances" off) - I am still getting some slight delays. And (sadly) some crackles/drop outs even when just playing back WAV loops...

I have installed ASIO and the problem remains - yet 7.07 seems fine with either DirectX or ASIO.

The delays are minimal - maybe a second or two where Live 7.09 seems unresponsive - especially when navigating the file browser (moving up a folder for instance). Slightly annoying - and in a home situation this is not a show stopper.

The drop outs - well - even when running 2 or 3 loops with no EFX the volume output red-lines easily - so I turn it down and physically turn my speakers up to cure it. But I still get crackles every few minutes - intermittent tho.

My soundcard is just a Sound Blaster - same as on my other PC which seems fine. All settings are the same other them my new PC having quad core and a different motherboard.

I have run through most of the troubleshooting tips and think I have done everything right.

Any clues - or is it just 7.09?
