honestly it depends on what you want to do.
check out kenton for a really compact knob box:

akai keys and pads if you want something to write stuff with.
novation automap controllers have some advantages, but they aren't really built great.
build your own using a doepher kit?

I use Faderfox LV2s - I've got 2 of them and they just rock! Buying another soon so I can control 18 tracks.
They're optimised for Live and from 7.0.2 onwards it's plug & play, no setup required.
Not too pricey either.

i'm perfectly happy with my Remote SL Zero, since i finally got my head around the editor (forget about automap, that sucks).
It RROCKS.

I had the bcr2000 and bcf2000 - sold them
I have a killamix mini - use it occaisionally
Faderfox lv2 - my go to controller - will prob get another one soon

Does depend what you want to do.
I kind of came up with a combo of things I need for production and for live play and I had to go a relatively cheape route so i ended up with a UC33e for knobs and faders, standard 49 key midi keyboard, Trigger finger, FCB1010 and the alesis control pad.
Kind of got bits of everything there, but it allows me foot control and hand control for live triggering of things plus tweaking and composing for production.
The alesis pad plus session drums is about the most fun I've had in the studio for some time.

Nocturn cheap as chips and it has a software GUI so you can actually see where you are.

I picked up an M-Audio Axiom 49 early this year. Keys, faders, knobs, and drum pads. I like it quite a bit.

Damn happy here with BCF2000 plus BCR2000 as an ultimate dub station. Really diggin' using buttons for sends. Wish I had 4 rows of buttons on one unit.
