Live sync to external hardware problem

Hi,
I'm currently experiencing an external sync issue with ableton live. This is my set up. I have a G4 1GHZ ibook with 768mb Ram running OSX 10.3.4 and an M-audio firewire audiophile external sound card.
I'm running Reason 2.5 rewired to Live 3.0.4 and I want to make my Roland VS1880 hard disc recorder play when I press play in Live. I've made the conections and it works when I use Cubase SX instead of Live. The Live manual says that the 'MIDI out indicator' flashes when live sends a MIDI message. Well it doesn't flash, it just stays on. Could this be the issue, or is it the Audiophile? Also, when I try to sync back the other way, with The VS 1880 as the master and Live as the slave, the tempo in live seems to jump around. This makes the delay unt in Reason speed up and slow down giving unwanted changes in pitch of the wet delay signal. ARGHHH! Why won't these machines just play nice? Any Ideas would be a appreciated.
