I am thinking of upgrading to 7 and I am not sure how much use Operator is. Do people really get a lot of use out of it?

I use plenty of VSTs and Sampler but don't really touch Operator. I have learnt it through tutorials etc so have experimented a bit.

Is it worth it's money and do people get a great deal of use out of it?

I like Operator a lot. you don't need Live 7 to get it. you can try it in demo mode on any version of Live.

Yeah I know I don't need 7 to get it, I already have it on 6. When I upgrade should I buy it? How many times will I really use it?

I will get Sampler for sure. Not so sure about the new things available in 7, the string emulator and so on.

Incidently I make Soulful, Deep and Jackin house.

If you already own it you don't need to buy it again when you upgrade to 7......

Very powerful and versitile and sounds great. Operator does everything.

I use it everything I do (musically), almost always.
I also found that explaining synthesis to people works very good with it.

That's right, it's like a separate add-on product. If they ever make huge changes to it, so big that it would justify calling it Operator 2, then we might have to pay again.

Well I never knew that. I thought it was start from scratch when you upgrade unless you bought the Suite copy. Nice one!

out of all the ableton synths, Operator is by far my favorite one of the bunch. It doesnt matter what track it is, I pretty much always use it on something. Dunno, sonically i can always get far more out of it then any other FM-based synth i've ever used.

do you own any other fm plugs? NI fm 8 ?

FM8 is very nice - it has good effects too (inc a sweet arp) and easier programming than Operator and the presets are much usable than many of Operators.

Operator though, is an amazing synth too and it integrates so well with Live (plus you don't have to run the extra plugin buffer in Live, which helps latency). If you tweak Operator, or get sounds from Puremagnetik or Covert Ops for it they really showcase the product better. I tend to use Operator most of these two since I upgraded to the L7 Suite.

worth every penny. and it gets even more interesting if you chain in another filter like filterfreak or volcano.

I know its nothing flashy to look at it, but it has the capability to be heard in every song that needs a synth... It just a good "bread & butter" synth that's very versatile.

Much better having it than not having it. ...and as said before, if you already own it, you don't need to buy it again.

I think Operator is a great FM synth. For me if I am going for a FM synth sound from scratch it is what I look for right away. Killer for drums and again just so fast for a FM synth. For bigger sounds and general FM synth power I think nothing beats FM8. It is a monster and has great presets. With Operator and FM8 I feel that I have my FM taken care of.

I find that Operator is a pretty sweet synth for old-school "house" sounds. I love it, perfect balance of simplicity and capability.
