(why not) sell samples of vst instruments?

is it legal to sample software instruments and sell the samples? i'm just wondering, as there seems to be no legal problem with sampling sounds off hardware synths, but is it the same with vstis? and would it make a difference if you sample presets or sounds you created yourself? what about romplers?

cheers

I am pretty sure that most software instruments would have an open license for you to be able to make music/samples from and not have to pay royalties, but you may want to verify this with the manual of whatever you got, or by contacting the manufacturer.

Question though, you'd sell the presets too as your own samples?!?

no, i'm just curious: sampling a piano is basically sampling a preset, no? selling samples of an 808 seems perfectly ok too - but sampling a drum (soft) synth? or even more a drum rompler? what about logic's ultrabeat - a mix of samples and synthesized sounds?

Well, if you just resample the library from Ulrabeat, that'd be kinda cheesy. If you use the synthesis function (even in conjunction with samples) and make your own beats or hits - I'd say that's cool.

But what the hell do I know?

I never pictured sampling a piano as being a pre-set, but i can see how it could be considered one. On that note, I guess you could sample almost anything, but I'd still see if I could find something in the manual or something through the manufacturer that says you can't. If the manual doesn't say you can't do it, I say do it.

I was just thinking, even though using pre-sets can be frowned upon...

There are tons of people out there who do not have access to Logic's Library of instruments, and would like to have them, samples of those pre-sets would certainly help those people out...

I'm sorry, but.......

anybody who buys a sample pack based on the presets of a vst, is a total newbie, and or moron... + I am quite sure this is totally not legit.

What would you sample? Native Instruments Kore Player?

You'll be hearing from their attorney I am fuckin' sure.

However, if you make your own sounds. Totally different story.

Cheers

But you can use the pre-set sounds in your songs, right?

Again, even though frowned upon by others...

I would check with the manufacturor or the manual about the legality of sampling the sounds.

And even if only noobs would use your sample packs, there are a lot of noobs out there...

Me? Sure. Why not?

Isn't this how corporations work?

As long as you are not warned/advised/told to not sample the pre-sets, I don't see a problem with it.

---

I want to add though that I personally love designing my own sounds. I do cycle through my pre-sets and get an idea of what my synths are capable of, and I might use a pre-set, but generally not before I do some of my own tweaking.

Maybe you could argue that this exactly how corporations work.

It seems ultra-cheesy, though, to sample presets to make a buck. Or even to give away for free to all "those who don't have access to Logic's library".
