midi latecy issue in ableton

Posted: Fri Aug 29, 2008 4:42 am
hi just wondering if you could help

- im using live 7.0.9, reason 4.0.1, novation remote sl 25 with latest
software+ m-audio fast track pro with latest driver on mac 10.4.11

the problem im having is any midi created(drawn in) using any 3rd
party vst like massive, fm8 etc or any reason instrument in rewire the
hits land late, the way im checking this is by recording each midi
clip to audio then zooming in on the warp markers ....ive tried the
external instrument plugin and adjusted the latency which then makes
some hits land early while other hits in the same loop land late? ive
also checked delay compensation and tried various buffer sizes in
preferences.

- if i draw in 4 drum hits using impulse then record the midi to
audio and zoom in its all spot on and in time and lines up perfectly
with the warp markers, ive reinstalled the latest novation software
and have port 3 selected in reason preferences for port in and port
out + followed the other 6steps which is what they say to do for
reason in rewire on page 54 of the user guide pdf
im not sure what is casing this problem - please help

thankyou :(

I'm having a similar problem with certain plugins.

Sometimes a MIDI note on the 1st beat of a pattern fires up late but the rest of it plays in time.

It's as if the VST gets the message to "start playing" late.

It's most noticeable on the Novation V-Station with the arpeggiator on, as this waits for the next quantisation step before it will fire the note up, so the arpeggio runs a quantisation step behind what it should be.

e.g. a 3-note arpeggio (holding down C, E & G)

Code: Select all

Good: C E G C E G C E

Bad: - C E G C E G C
         ^
     missed
       note

It reminds me of the bad old days when a Roland MC-303 would crap itself if you changed onto a pattern with lots going on at the beginning - dropped notes all over the place.

(currently using Live 7.0.1)

I'm having the same issue, but with 6.0.11. Occurs most frequently with Battery - I will load a kit, which will work fine, then load another and there is at least a second of latency when striking the key to sound coming out. Once Battery is loaded in, all midi instruments will have latency. If no Battery, no latency. Midi notes are recorded late as well, plus same latency if cells are clicked with a mouse. Been through many e-mails with Abelton and one with Native Instruments (their response: we only support Battery in Live 7. Took two weeks to hear from them.) Tried Live 7 demo and had same issue. Ableton has come up with nothing except a lot of questions of settings for Live, but everything is basically set to default.

Will post if anything is resolved. Doubt it though - Battery was crashing Live 6.0.4 (or around that version) and they never came up with anything. I stopped using and resumed at a later update and the crashing stopped. Now just latency.
