silly question but ... [play midi clip AND midi keyboard]

Hi

i'd like to know if it's possible to :

hear a midi clip loop playing
AND AT THE SAME TIME
to play notes on my midi controller (MPD24 or Midi Keyboard)

because when i activate MIDI "IN" i don't hear the midi clip playing anymore.. you see ?

during my gigs i'd like for example to let a very simple MIDI beat playing in impulse and add some sounds that i would play live in the impulse with my MPD24

thanks a lot

Yes, it's possible. You need to share a bit more about what you're using, what version of Live you have, and exactly what you're trying to do.

Then, you'll get more answers.

hem
i didn't think u needed to know everything of my setup

live 7
MPD 24
impulse
PC

(for exemple)

i make a simple 4/4 beat in a midi clip with impulse
just want to be able to play drums on this impulse track with my MPD24 pads WHILE the simple 4/4 beat clip is still playing and can still be heard

maybe i don't explain my question well enough as i'm not speaking english very well....

thanks

I had a similar newb type question. I tried the different buttons but it seems no matter what I set that either I get no sound or it's recording whatever I'm goofing off with and I don't want it to record. Live 7, by the way.

in fact i just got some partial answers elsewhere on the web

when you star to record notes into a clip you can then toggle the "OVR" button in the main menu bar and still hear what you play and the clip is also still playing but it doesn't seem to work everytime, you have to start recording first then click ovr etc...

anyone got a simple procedure to do what we want ?

it can be done.

record your clip as usual, do not stop it, just switch monitoring to Auto from In, you can play along with your recording.

pretty sure that's how it's done, I don't do it that often and don't have Live with me.

thanks Tone Deft
but what you propose doesn't work
record your clip as usual, do not stop it, just switch monitoring to Auto from In, you can play along with your recording.
when i swith from AUTO to IN the midi clip can't be heard anymore, i only hear notes played on my MPD24

still searching...

Yeah, I think that's what I do, too. Let me make sure I understand what you want. You have a clip recorded and would like to play it and record more into the clip as you go? To layer up a drum pattern?

For that, I just put monitoring into Auto, create a clip, arm the record button, and start adding stuff. The clip loops and whatever I play is recorded on top of what is already there.

I asked for the other info, because I thought maybe you were trying to play another MIDI sound live, along with the clip you had recorded. I thought you might be having MIDI mapping trouble, or external MIDI instrument trouble.

[This refers to activity in Session View.]

I'm sorry, I meant switch from IN to AUTO.

if you're stuck in 6 hours I'll be home and try it then.

thanks TroyP but in fact in do not want to record some more notes but to hear some more notes played live

in fact Tone Deft is right
doing it he's way works
you also have to toggle OVR off
i can't manage to do it everytime i try (weird!!!**) but it works

so thanks
i've been wondering for a long time (from time to time) how to do that

OK. I read too fast. Yes, this is possible too. Assuming you mean to just play along with the beat live....not to record the live-played notes.

Create the drum loop on Track 1 in Session View. Start it playing.

Then, create a second MIDI track. This can be done just by dragging a MIDI instrument into the open space to the right of any existing tracks.

There are two ways to hear what is played on Track 2. The record button will be armed when you add the instrument. You should be able to play and hear the 2nd instrument playing with the clip that is already playing.

You can also set monitoring for Track 2 to "IN." In this case, recording does not have to be armed for Track 2.

yes the track 2 solution is ok
but it works with one track only as told us tone deft

thank to both of you
each solution will be used and well used

monitor auto and track armed - both clip and live-input do sound.

You can arm multiple channels.

If you click on the OVR-button on the top, then everything you play on your midi-controller gets recorded into the running clip (overdub).
