Playing a VST instrument/ miditrack without recording

I have tried to find a solution on how to play a VST intrument on a miditrack (clips) without enabling the recording.
When I enable the track for playing it is ok, but after recording a clip I will play along with the clip and look for sounds to fill in. The problem is that the track records anything I play. I want to find the sound by playing, without recording, and then hit a button when I'm ready to record on top of the first clip.
There must be a simple solution to this that I have overlooked.

Please help!

if you set monitor to in you will monitor what you play without recording it.
as far as i understand you want to record something, then enable monitor in and play along and then when youre satisfied, drop back to re-recording the clip? if you im guessing you have to midimap the track arm and monitor selection buttons, unless you want to use several tracks (ie, one for recording and one for monitoring) and sending them both to the track containing the instrument.

turn off the overdub button at the top.
