I'm slowly moving from Cubase (PC) to Ableton (Mac) and seem to be struggling with a decent replacement to get that compressed 85hz bassline that Waves RBass gives me on the PC.

Any suggestions? The EQ8 in Ableton doesn't really do the trick, without setting up a rack of EQs and compressors etc.

I am not sure if this helps you, but when it comes to VST bass sounds, I highly recommend Native Instruments 'Massive'. Pinning it down imply on bass sounds is hugely unfair to this amazing VST synth, and I am not sure if you weren't looking for a Ableton Plug In to do the job, but nevertheless, this beast is worth checking it out!

Cheers mate... I'll check that out.

However... What I'm wanting to do, is all within Ableton.... Basically to EQ and Compress around the 80-90Hz frequency, giving a bassline some extra depth.

If I use the EQ8, this doesn't seem to actually do anything other than boost... I guess I'll just keep fiddling with compressors etc for now, as I'm only just getting to grips with Ableton and the manual is getting a tad boring on the 3rd read, so it's going back in the box!

i use the saturator plug in.

just switch the disto type to sine fold and drop the filters down to teh bass range.

compress afterwards to smooth it out. works like a charm, just don't overdo it.

yeah, I was just literally thinking about that kind of a chain whilst in the shower, haha!

why change from rbass?

very nice. that is a sweet trick.

-add new track, put in monitor mode
-select input from track or bus you want to process
(you really don't want it on *everything*)
-put auto filter with bandpass, in the range where you want it (60, 80, 100Hz, etc)
-slap compressor after it, tweak filt. frequency, Q, and adjust level to taste


it's kind of like the idea of setting your subs on an aux for live sound,
(which has become pretty standardized these days) it's a lot more powerful to
me than adding a bunch of EQ. you could also put the filter chain on an aux send too.


edit: i see now that the same basic thing has been suggested above...

Yeah I see that.... It's sounding much sweeter now, but not quite as good as the RBass... Will keep fiddling and let you know if I find more...

i hate the way rbass sounds.

psp mixpack has a bass saturator that i've been playing with last couple of days. but the tip on using abes own saturator sounds interesting.

OK... Am sat on the laptop with headphones right now (so the settings may be a little exaggerated for studio use) and fiddling with saturator.

Although I don't quite understand some of the ways the knobs have been named, but from playing-by-ear, this I've found is giving a good effect to bass boosting.

And that's how it's looking.... I'll be honest, still needs a bit more tweaking, but I'm really starting to get some great depth to the 80-100hz area of a bassline.
