Hello,

iTunes is known to be one of the worst MP3 encoder. It is better to use lame-based software. Which OS do you use?

For Windows, there is dbPowerAmp, but I don't know if it is free. I don't know either if it uses Lame (I'm a Linux and Mac OS user).

Here is some links from Lame site:

On Mac, I use Max:

Totally agree with your itunes comment, it's the worst.

For PC use CDex - very simple, solid and easy to use:

For Mac I too use Max - very similar to CDex

EDIT

Stop chatting around, use Lame!

Here's a Windows GUI for Lame beginners that brings the Lame encoder along (not the most current version though) and offers an extensive help-file on everything you need to know about MP3 encoding.

http://winlame.sourceforge.net/

Here's an overview of software for all platforms:

Look here for latest binary/exe builds and another nice GUI called lameDROP that also supports OGG and FLAC as input:

For ripping CDs use Exact Audio Copy:

Basta losers! :!:

This is what we say: CDex can use Lame, Max uses Lame.

On my Mac I love "All2MP3". Drop a wav on it and get an mp3 in the quality you selected in the dropdown box.

Can't imagine there could be an easier way....

So is iTunes good for ripping CDs to wav?

I would like to say that ripping should cause no problem with any rip software, as it is just a binary copy of the data of the audio CD to data file, and adding the WAV header (frequency, bitrate, ...) at the beginning of the file. There is no destructive/lossless modification like mp3 encoding. .
