Yes, but doesn't have velocity
Select user 1 button (I think).

I don't know much about the LPD8, but if you are using it for mostly making beats then I would go for something that has velocity to make the work flow a little faster.
I pretty much use the LP for launching clips, and I have a Axiom 25 which I use for making beats with its pads.
The cool thing about LP is that Lives Drum racks line up with LP so its easy to navigate through all of the drum racks sounds.
Just no velocity (unless you manually draw the velocity).
Hope that helps.
Re: Using the Launchpad as a drumpad controler?
For some styles, velocity is unimportant.
I've been using the launchpad for electro drums today and it's really good fun and great to have a giant drum kit in front of me.

LPD8 is a nice little controller. the pads are well built and pressure sensitive. Live 8 recognizes it and best of it all the price is really good.
Re: Using the Launchpad as a drumpad controler?
LP - can do more Live specific things with it. the buttons natively support more features. not velocity sensitive, the level/pan/send etc controls are pretty grainy, IOW large steps between each setting. not as small as the LDP8 but still easy to hold in your hand or lap or backpack.
LPD8 - velocity sensitive, knobs for precision setting of levels etc. but you have to map it to control stuff, fewer controls. smaller for portability.
I'd say the LPD8 is more musical while the LP is more for control. both can be used to bang out drums. you can use Live's Groove Pool to add velocity swing if you'd like.

Re: Using the Launchpad as a drumpad controler?
If the main focus is on banging out beats, I think the Launchpad would be way too limiting, even if they didn't need velocity control, I'd find the layout way too constraining. I use my Axiom, and (mildly redundant) M-audio Trigger Finger for that sort of thing. I think my fingers would probably develop claustrophobia trying to work in the amount of space each of the LP buttons inhabits within the context of finger drumming.

Its a wee bit tight, but not too bad. Having 64 drum sounds at your fingertips is incredibly fun.

Red Neck Special Edition:
LPD8's Preset 1: Live performance/arrangement mode - Mutes, FX' Faders etc... to allow more creativity with Launchpad.
Other presets for live drums, instruments, beat juggling etc...
(Mounted to an L-shaped piece of clear 10mm laminate left over from construction of the conservatory wrapped in black tape.Devices secured with blu-tack)
USB cables taped together
Live feedback with the LPD8's orange lit pads is luvly...
Knobs are too small though; may up-grade at some point with some larger generic ones...
Thinking about having a mini fader unit as an optional though not keen on the korg nano as I've heard bad reports....
Most of the stuff I've finished recently has been arranged with this mutant. Like to look out of the window rather than at a screen any day!
