Good club in San Francisco?

Post by Sibanger » Sat Sep 08, 2007 12:15 am

Hi, just wondering. A couple of mates of mine will be traveling through the states working and will be stopping over to party in San Francisco for a few days.
They tend to like the 'Acid Jazz' genre, or anything a bit funky and electronic.

Any suggestions would be great thanks.

Pink in The Mission is good during the week for some Funky House. Go late though cause it generally doesn't pick up until about 11.

Thanks beats me. I'll let em know.
Not knowing San Fran too well, is 'The Mission' an area in San Fran? And if so, where would they find it?

The Mission is a district or area of SF that is somewhat in the southern part. There are a lot of cool clubs, bars, and restaurants there. I would say it's one of the more exciting and less touristy parts of the city. It also has it's waaay ghetto parts but you would get more of a locals feeling that not everybody goes to when they visit, unlike Haight St. which everybody knows and goes to. That's still a cool part of town also but the Mission is a little off the tourist guide's map.

pink is really cool. cats like rich medina, dj spinna, jazzanova, giles peterson, and king britt do damageon the ones and twos in that venue.

and another cool spot is poleng lounge. They have a backroom where they usually play the brazillian funk/breaks/experimental/nu jazz. he bartenders are cool and if u go there during the daytime their chicken wings rock!

if there are other venues you want to know about pm me and ask and i will see what i can find.

Definitely check out the Recombinant Media Lab if there's a show that night and your friends want to see some cool electronic stuff:

pick up two FREE newspapers, they're in bins on most street corners where stuff is happening
http://www.sfbg.com/ <-- SF Bay Guardian
http://www.sfweekly.com/ <-- SF Weekly
flip to the back, ~3/4 way through, tons of club listings, they vary by the night.

check a map, start with market at the san francisco bay end, south of market (SOMA) south

the part of the mission you want is along Valencia and Mission Streets (mostly Valencia) from about 16th to 24th, a block off either street (they're one block apart from each other), 26 Mix, Beauty Bar (tiny bar but tons of women), The Elbo Room to name a few. Also the area around 9th and Folsom (Slims <rock>, Holy Cow <drunk chicks>, Butter <white trash fun>). there are more downtown areas, just south of market from ~3rd St to 7th St.
http://www.cafedunord.com/ <-- cafe du nord, smaller bit it's where the hipsters hang out, more of the kitschy music
http://www.dnalounge.com/ DNA Lounge <--- cool spot
Supperclub, Spundae, Kit Kat Klub, Kelly's Mission Rock are some more other haps, anyway, check those papers for details. Bring cab money and always expect it to get colder at night, although August - October have absolutely the best weather of the year, it's been PERFECT the last two weeks. it won't rain but that moist ocean air/fog CAN get HEAVY at night, not always, but be ready or drunk. Ruby Skye www.rubyskye.com is the more shallow, money oriented asshole younger crowd but they have a KILLER sound system and attract big acts (tiesto just played there, crystal method are coming up), club six (6th and market), milk (upper haight, haight by golden gate park for hip hop)... there's more, that's a start.

hit the bar Zeitgeist on a nice day, Lucky 13 at night. Lower haight (haight street from ~Buchnan to ~Steiner) is cool, noc noc, the toronado, nickies, mad dog in the fog.

Underworld's playing tomorrow night (FUCK YEAH!), Pitch Black (HELL FUCKING YEAH!!) is playing Thursday night and the Chemical Brothers are playing September 28th (OMFG YES!!). they'd also probably dig some of the shows coming up at the Independent
http://www.theindependentsf.com/sept2007.htm <-- more of the reggae/downtempo shit, great little venue.

+1 on Recombinant Media Lab http://recombinantmedia.net/
and the
audium http://www.audium.org/
is definitely worth checking out. on those lines, the
exploratorium http://www.exploratorium.edu/ is a trip.
