ULTRALITE : how to make an "auxiliary master output" ?

Post by supamonsta » Tue Jun 16, 2009 10:04 am

Hi,

I'm struggling with how to route a second master bus to one of the analog output pairs of the motu ultralite???

I'd like to have a second master output sending signal to another input pair (for recording stuff), but the cuemix console doesn't seem to allow to route the "from-DAW-signal" to other outputs than master 1+2...

I don't like having to route the master signal back from my mixing console, since it makes sooo much more signal degradation and volume loss... and stupid additionnal cable patching.

Any idea?

(I posted on motunation, but I guess there will be ages before I get answered ;) )

i never used the cuemix of the motu itself too much. I would just open another channel in live, set it to resample, monitor-in and route it to output 3 and 4.

Thanks,

your answer makes sense, but I forgot to mention a few details:

I'd like to route TRAKTOR's output to a stereo channel in Ableton live, so as to be able to record my mixes.

I tried with JACK OS X, but it's really buggy and a bit over complicated to do this simple "auxiliary master bus"...

So I thought I could just connect one analog output pair of the ultralite to one analog input pair, and simply route a "master bus" to this output pair using the cuemix console, then record the input into live...

BUT...

I cant' manage to route the "from-computer-signal" (traktor) to the physical outputs of the ultralite (it goes only thru the master output pair)...

Is it possible????

Who do you people with one ultralite manage to output several master channels, without using ableton live's routing abilities?

cheers

whoah whoah.

have you used the cueMix software?

1 - check out the mixes section. you can set up different mixes coming out of different outputs

2 - i havent used traktor, but i imagine you can define which outputs it uses? send it out analog 5-6 for example and patch those back into some inputs (with real cables).

?

- soundflower : I didn't try it since I read that Jack OSX was good enough (even better for some) to get the job done (and free)

- whoah whoah : yup, you may be right, but :

- 1) I checked up the cuemix console, and tried lots of stuff, virtual AND real routings... no way, I did not manage to route the master-from-computer to any other analog outputs than the master outs...

- 2) setting a different ultralite channel for traktor out : won't change anything, I'll still have only ONE master out, AND I WANT TWO. one for monitoring, one for recording. (and a cue channel that comes from traktor to my ultralite's phones out, but that link is broken if I have to use jackosX..)

anyway thanks for trying to help, I'll spend more time on this tonight... (perhaps the ultralite's way of doing this would be to assign traktors output to, i.e, analog outs 3+4, and then it perhaps would be possible to have this output mirrored in the master out?... well, that's a clue...)

feedback soon ;)

http://www.cycling74.com/products/soundflower

it's free too, and more robust than Jack OS X...

+1 for checking out CueMix before getting too deep into add'l apps.

sorry for whoahing you, it took me a while to learn the ins and outs of cueMix too. some tricky things:

- the mix section really does work, but you have to choose an output for each mix. they are all disabled by default, and you have to unmute each mix channel you want.

- the outputs in cuemix / motu audio setup are not numbered the same in most software (analog out 3/4 are called outs 5/6 in live for example)

- if you route channels to channels 3/4 in tracktor for example, you can tell the motu audio setup to send those channels out the headphones (phones assign)

hope that helps.

for sure you should be able to get it working with the Ultralite, however Soundflower is very good, and a lot less messing around...

swishniak, fishmonkey, mikemc, thanks for your help,

I'll check first:

-cuemix console (there MUST be a possibility to do this, and there MUST be a bug in my own comprehension of motu's ultralite routing abilities and cuemix console understanding...)

but if it still does'nt work:

-soundflower seems tasty (if it's more robust and intuitive than jack, then...), but if it is like jackpilot, it means I won't be able to cue tracks in the phones in traktor, since you have to use jack or soundflower as a soundcard that has no physical devices... (well, I'm more and more lost ;) )

-naaaah, I don't want of another application (I use live, traktor, farmpad, midi stroke, universal access.... and if I could avoid any new addon... just to be able to route and record a mix set from traktor to live... that would be cooooool. in fact, that SHOULD be an easy operation.

well I'll struggle with it further more tonite... there must be a solution ;)

Soundflower will not limit your monitoring options as you can tap into the Soundflower channels from different places at the same time...

I don't have my ultralite with me right now, so I can't load CueMix, but there's an option in the Menus called something like "Mix 1 Return includes Computer Output". The Ultralite gives you an extra input pair (I think it's 11-12), which returns CueMix's Mix 1's output as a virtual input, or with this option on, returns Mix 1 summed with whatever you're sending from the computer to Mix 1's output pair.

You could output from Traktor to 1-2 and use this to record into Live through 11-12.

OhMyGod.

That's what I wanted to hear ;)

I've had a little blink at cuemix console yesterday night, really quickly as my girl was waiting for me for something non-related to gear porn ( ),

but I don't remember having found any option like the one you describe...

I'll check it better tonight, your explanations seem reliable and really useful,

many thanks :D

IT WORKS !!!

no need for a soft like soundflower or jackpilot, the ultralite is OK to do the job ;)

It was a bit of pain in the *** to configure it properly, as the little text about "allow mix1 bus returns from computer" option in the manual is extremely HARD to understand...

but I got it. Just have to set a mix bus with 1+2 faders up, and outputting to "main outs". If the option "mix1 bus returns..." is checked on, then this bus will send the sound coming from the computer (+ the inputting signal 1+2) to an "extra virtual stereo output" 11+12.

Just arm a record track in Live, monitoring in these 11+12 inputs, and it's ok.

It was EXTREMELY complex to understand and to set up, but it actually WORKS GREAT.

Motu could have made an easier option, i.e., the availability of the "from-computer sound" to each submix in cuemix console, as an extra stereo channel that could be routed in either ways...

Thanks a lot

cheers
