is anyone having success with Looper in 8.0.3 or 8.0.4?

Post by nowtime » Fri Jul 24, 2009 4:36 pm

That is a quote from Tone Deft in this thread http://forum.ableton.com/viewtopic.php? ... 90&start=0

I was about to upgrade to Live 8 specifically for the looper ( out of my rent money !) when I saw that thread which reads pretty ominous to me.

I experimented with the demo and was very excited that first-loop-sets-tempo worked quite well. The looper did act strangely but I figured I just needed a go at the manual to get it sorted.

All I am going to use it for is the first loop and then start recording to clips, maybe have some fun with overdubs.

More than a toy, I am planning on building a whole ensemble around this thing so it is important to me.

Testimonies? (please mention OS and versions you are using)

Not mine, but I am still on ver 7.
I have had a few questions go unanswered where I had to rely on my own process......the result was more empowering.

I am using 8.0.4 on my laptop and I gig just about every weekend and I use looper and the behringer 1010. I haven't experienced any hitches since Ableton broke the looper in one of the betas, but full releases have worked fine for me. I do a lot with the looper too. I will delete and reloop parts during a single song, stack 3 or 4 parts onto a loop, undo, redo. I put it through the paces.

still hosed. 8.0.4

it'll record one loop, play it back as 8 beats, then re-arrange the squares from 8 to 4 squares and play empty audio.

Quantization = none
record = x bars
then = play
song control = none
tempo control = none
input + output = always

off to dinner in a bit, maybe I'll trash my preferences.cfg.

:evil:

EDIT - changing then from play to overdub lets me record one loop but I can't overdub, even with the overdub + button on the left side.

EDIT - now when I record a loop it plays the recorded loop once then it goes back to a take I had previously Cleared.

It seems to depend a lot on what settings you use. I haven't had any problems using it quantized with the mode selected to follow the Liveset's existing tempo and record for a known number of bars, using a nanoPad to 'punch the buttons' for record, play, overdub, undo and clear. I like to build up harmonies while I'm thinking about them, and it works great for that. It works great for rhythmic noise overlay also, and it is cool to put it in a track that is resampling also.

On the other hand, in the few attempts I've made I have not been able to get it to correctly detect a tempo of anything I've recorded into it unless it is something that is played into it at the tempo of the liveset.

So some permutations of settings seem to cause conditions that are are not defined-- what is 'None', 'None' and 'x bars' supposed to do? It is supposed to loop at some tempo until you hit the button. What happens when you hit the butto/n, what tempo is it playing at? If it guesses the wrong tempo, how can it solve for "x"?

Also, there are some things that seem obvious that are missed: midi mapping each 'cell' of looper so you can trigger a beat, for example.

looper works great for me. I'm trying to read and figure what the problem is, but i'm not quite getting it. I use looper in a live situation to set live's tempo in an acoustic project and then layer different loops. It's cool.

So looper works perfect for me as far as basic functionality but if you're all up in doing crazy stuf i don't know

No major problems here since I replaced a faulty pedal switch.
However sometimes I get a sort of delay between pressing the switch and record.

Check to see if your looper is set to quantization = global, or really, anything other than none. When the quantization is set to anything other than none, it will start recording at the next downbeat, or 1/4 note or whatever the quantize setting is. I have mine set to none and it results in instant recording at the push of a button.
