Rewire with Reason to Ableton 8 suite

Post by Relentless » Sun Sep 06, 2009 5:09 pm

Having issues getting reason to come through Ableton via rewire. I open Live first the Reason 4.0. I don't think i am setting the preferences right. I go to Preferences > File Folder > and here are my settings: Create analysis folder-'on' > Sample editor-'C:programfiles\Propellerheads\Reason\Reason.exe' > Temp Folder-'Set to my ableton live project folders' ... Plugin Sources are set Rescan plugins-'rescan' Use VST plugin custom folder-'on' > VST folder- 'is to my external hardrive'.

Reason doesnt show up anywhere or in my plugin folder. Any ideas? Thanks everyone.

I am new to this, and my intent is to play instruments from Reason through ableton via my axiom 25 I just got. If this helps with ideas or suggestions by all means I could use all the help I can get =) Thanks again.

You don't use reason as a VST within live, that's now how ReWire works.

Open Live, then open Reason and it should say that reason is now in ReWire Mode..

In a midi track in Live you'll want to drag an "External MIDI Instrument".

This MIDI instrument will send MIDI to Reason, and receive audio back from Reason into the track in Live.

YouTube probably has a good tutorial on it.

It's all good, it's a confusing set up, i used to use it but i'd have to have a new live set for every 8 reason instruments and switching stuff around was confusing.. but it's awesome to use reason's instruments with live.

I wish you could open reason as VSTi and use the rack setup across several tracks, it'd be pretty sweet.

Ok so I am trying to get this to work, when I open Reason I dont see where it says running in Rewire mode. I look all over and dont see it. And can you explain more about dragging an external instrument? Do you mean drag like for instance, a synthesizer tool or redrum from reason onto an existing track in live? A new 'empty' track in live? Thanks again.

Yeah it's kinda tricky, I'll try and get it down step by step so it's easier. 8)

1. Open Live create a MIDI track if there isn't already one.
2. Open Reason make an instrument(maalstrom/subtractor/etc) and make sure it is connected to the mixer at 1/2 by hitting tab and running the imaginary cable to 1/2, if you need to make multiple instruments make sure they are connected to 3/4, 5/6, and so on..
3. Go to the browser in Live, under Instruments you will find External Instrument.
4. Drag it into a MIDI track and arm it.
5. In external instrument, select MIDI to: Reason, and under that select the synth (maalstrom, combinator, etc..) that you want to control
6. Set the AUDIO FROM Reason 1/2 or wherever the instrument is on Reason's mixer..

Live must be opened first, and it should say ReWire slave mode in Reason, if it doesn't do that then you've got a problem with ReWire.. that I can't help you with.

That way you are sending MIDI to Reason's synth, and it's playing the instrument, THEN audio is being sent from Reason's mixer to that track set up in Live.. you can record midi clips, do all the regular stuff, it just is controllable through Live..

Hope this helps! Don't feel discouraged it took me a while.

I still had some trouble. I hope it's obvious to you where I went wrong. (This is live 6 and reason 4.)

Here's the "back" of my Reason setup:

I don't see a "1/2" though my Acoustic Bass is plugged in to channel 1 on the mixer. Hopefully that's fine.

In Live I'm in even more trouble.
Image
I have no external instrument.

If I haven't included enough info then let me know and thanks!

As far as I know that mixer you have is a device that you would've added.. I'm talking about the big mixer at the very top.. it's labeled 'Hardware Device', it's there by default..

As for the ext. instrument, I thought you were using Live 8 Suite?

Oh wait, that was the OP.. Not sure about you're situation.
