ive heard nothing but good about the ion/micron engine, and i know that the micron iasnt just a cut-down ion, because it has drum and sequencing options that the ion doesnt have.

for stuff like that, i think using max/msp or Reaktor is really the only way to go. sure, itll take a year or 2 to really get anywhere, but once you do, you can start totally customizing your setup, and intergrate it into ableton's more "traditional" workflow (for anyone on the Reaktor forum as well ...
