The ultralite works fantastic with macbook pro. (that's what i have)
now i also have motu pre-8. which is also fantastic with the macbook.

it is very hard to find anybody that is not happy with motu ultralite.

on the other side

I highly recommend the Motu Ultralite!

You could buy it used on ebay. maybe 400-450.

If you only have 300 to spend, ask a good friend for the extra 150. and pay him back.
But don't go cheap on audio interface. Cause IMHO it's a terrible mistake.

I have a Motu Ultralite. Which is a great piece of gear. Very happy with it.
BUT

It only has two preamps. So if i need to record 8-10 microphones simultaneously (drums mostly).

People told me to get a preamp.

BUT.

The motu ultralite has 2 pre amps, and 8 ins 1/4.

Then you can enhance it with EQ + Compression.
