modular?
I was thinking more of possible complimentary devices from AKAI, like just a load of knobs, faders, or something with drum pads and an XY thing. But I'll stop dreaming. most of my prayers have been answered already. The rest is just academic.

Will the APC40 be able run the type of apps that monome uses i e like the step sequencers etc etc.
I get the impression that with MFL, it will be able to do that and much more.
The more I think about it, the more it seems that Live with MFL and an APC will be the closest thing out there to a hard/soft modular environment.
This is going to be a bottomless pit, wait and see.

Right now, it looks like a very attractive new toy.
The top is 42cm wide, it is 33,5cm deep and the height is around 6,5cm aka it is pretty much backpack compatible.
It may not be exact to every millimeter as this is no spec sheet info but freshly reverse engineered the old school on the device itself way using a ruler.

Awesome! Rulers don't lie!
One more question, dom: Is it bus-powered?
I like cheese.

Yeah, I am hoping that you can build something with M4L that will allow you to...

- to choose a 'mode' or 'instrument' for the pads matrix
- and still choose what controls are locked to ableton

NOO
it will not be bus powered.
No way.
It consumes more energy than possible bus power can cover!!
When do they start selling them??

APC40 will be $399 list, so expect it to be a little over $300 on the street.

It seems to have a power plug. But, the monome 64 is bus powered. Leds use very low energy.

From another thread (again

):
Ralf wrote:[nis] wrote:
The APC40 is unfortunately NOT bus powered. Due to the huge amout of LEDs, the overall power consumption is too high to get powered from a USB connection (USB can only provide a max. of 500 mA).
If I count correctly, that's 379 LEDs which might light at the same
time, especially if you tinker around with MfL. 240 for the endless encoders, 80 for the 5x8 Matrix, etc.
They are quite bright, so even if they are low power versions and take only, let's say, 4 mA (in case of a 1:1 busy cycle), that's already 3 times the capacity of an USB link, for the LEDs alone. Wow!

Important question regarding APC40 and GROUP TRACKS :
I sure hope Ableton is implementing the group tracks in a way that one group track in sessions view is resembled by one LED column in the APC40s matrix.
