Hendrix. Tricky. Early stuff for both. Without them, I wouldn't have bothered trying to make my own music. These two made me feel like I could do something important musically... not because these pro's weren't good, but because they didn't have a classical background.

I've spent a lot of time trying to get some kind of creamy distortion out of Live and you can't do it.

Ultimately, someone here led me to Simulanalog Guitar Suite and I haven't looked back. It's tiny, it's free, it's stable and it emulates Marshall, Boss and Ibanez amps and distortion effects ...

Quandry:

That does sound nice. Slight compression coupled with this is a nice aggressive sound.

Good find!

Mein gott! That guitarsuite is perfect. I LOVE THAT IT HAS NO GUI INTERFACE. I hate twiddling knobs with a mouse.

And there be some creamy distortion in that bit of kit! It's quiet, simulates feedback properly and it's VERY tasty. I can't believe it's free.

Anyone who hasn ...

DrainBamage: That's part of the reason I was doing this. I agree that it's better to have the effects external, but, in my head, I felt that using native effects in your DAW should be close to the same thing. Notice, I said close...I know that there is a load, I just figured it would be much smaller ...

Thanks mate, that was quite helpful.

I've been on this "simplify" bent lately and I wanted to reduce the number of plugins I use. A friend showed me some of the amazing things he is able to do with Operator and Simpler alone and I thought it would be awesome if I could similarly use Ableton solo ...

Can Ableton convincingly do guitar effects?

I've been woodshedding a bit and I have been able to get the most beautiful tones out of Ableton just using my guitar plugged into my D.I. box and Ableton itself.

The one thing I haven't been able to do is get a decent lead metal sound: creamy compressed distortion with gobs of sustain and a ...

I took a rendered Wav over to my mate's flat and he used Har-Bal (www.har-bal.com) on it. Hands down, it's the simplest and most effective version for "fattening" up your mix without having to read a 300 page book.

That's cuz I'm lazy. I really do recommend reading those books and actually knowing ...

I'm assuming, since you went through a couple of the tutorials, that you are getting sound out of Ableton. So the next logical step is:

Did you try "arming" the clip or track? If you don't want to do complex remixes and the like, Ableton is really quite simple.
