The Axiom line by M-Audio has those little guys. They are also "endless rotary encoders", which may not be what you want.

Sounds like that is probably within the "need to wear protection" range, mostly based on the peaks, but the exposure lengths could be an issue as well. There is a guy who has done some neat stuff with tapes. DJ Artyom or something like that. I believe there was a pretty good quote from him on CDM recently. Something about "club" and "copulate". I don't know if he had any MIDI stuff going on, though...
