As I'm playing, nothing registers on the screen. No solid bar to expand, nothing.
Umm... sounds like you're not recording anything... have you enabled the record button on the track and global record before you hit the play button and play the keyboard?
To 'see' the music you must be recording ...

what do you see when recording, on the lane of your instrument - is there only a bar getting longer? Then you can unfold the view of that lane by clicking on the circle right to the name of the channel. Then you should be able to see a representation of the notes you record into your clip on the ...

Have you done the included lessons for live yet? they are a really good starting point to better understand how the program works..
