hi all- student on a budget here.
i've had a simple midi keyboard controller and a korg nanopad for some time along with live lite. I've been trying to get the hang of it and suffered a number of false starts over the past year and want to give it another go when i finish school next month. so here ...

Re: alright here it goes....
I currently work at home on an imac but might need a laptop soon because i'm a student teacher. i can get a pretty heavy discount on a thinkpad (under 800 for a 14.1" t420 i5/4gb ram), but my current old laptop runs my second/mobile copy of live lite pretty terribly AND doesn't have all the ...

windows 8
What are folks' opinions on windows 8 so far? Too early to tell? I was ignoring it till I saw some good reviews and now I'm wondering if I should try to hold off on replacing my 2005 hp typewriter with a thinkpad/w7, mbp, mbair or thinkpad/w8. Or are tablets going to be the future of live? In some ...

Re: midi & key mappings- best practices?
thank you! i'll look into it. so many tutorial videos and half of them don't go past "why live is different" while the others are about things that are way over my head when i'm still struggling just to get around the program.

relative midi mappings and key mappings for navigation.
In advance, sorry--I'm new and i've looked around for these answers. I assume i'm supposed to use my arrow keys to get around my clips, but i can't figure out a way to quickly get what i would normally call my cursor into that view. I can select the track headings (I assign them keys by their ...

Re: gear/software purchasing progression
Thanks, everyone. The google has figured out that i am visiting a lot of these websites and now i get ads for the big audio stores on every website i go to. So i'll just tell myself no new purchases in the short term, maybe a launchpad/nanokontrol in the medium term. if i were to bring my ancient ...

Re: gear/software purchasing progression
as of now i'm only playing trumpet and cowbell live, so i don't hook up any sound system. i'm pretty bewildered by the whole laptop->mixer relationship and frankly i'm not even totally clear on what an audio interface is... like a fancy external sound card that has extra channels for monitoring ...

midi & key mappings- best practices?
Are there any standard setups floating around out there for midi and keyboard mappings? especially since i'm brand new to this and don't have an apc 40 right now I find the interface very cumbersome, so it would be nice to have a jumping off point on that. What are the most important controls to ...

So i'm currently using live lite 8 on an imac with a 2-octave m-audio oxygen keyboard and a korg nanopad, both of which i picked up used. I play in a band that gets money for gigs on occasion but am otherwise generally a broke student who will hopefully be teaching in a year. I just recently ...

Re: Should I buy a Thinkpad? Time sensitive
3+ years old thinkpads have TI chipset
I recomend macintosh
could you elaborate on the TI chipset? this would likely be my school/lesson planning/audio laptop for a year or two with an upgrade to a mbp when/if i have a stable job/have become confident enough with ableton that i feel like i need ...

Re: Should I buy a Thinkpad? Time sensitive
thanks for the encouragement. what are the main bottlenecks? is the sound card ok? i'm not really up to date on intel stuff anymore i3/5/7? it seems to just be 2.5/2.6/2.7 Ghz...
can i please have a hierarchy of upgrades like
1. ram
2. processor
3. and so forth?

Re: re:newbie Midi note doesn't play at beginning of clip.
is the beginning of the midi note actually at the end of a looping clip? i have this problem sometimes, but i'm new too... try dragging the beginning of your midi note to make sure it starts in the middle of the clip, then delete the tiny blip at the end of the clip?

Should I buy a Thinkpad? Time sensitive
Hi all-
So i'm new to ableton, electronic sound making (I play trumpet, guitar, keys, know basic music theory but not frequencies, harmonics, compressors, mastering, electronic stuff, etc). First i got a used oxygen keyboard, then a korg nanopad, and i've successfully made some basic electro beats ...
