windows 8

Post by skamunista » Tue Sep 20, 2011 12:23 pm

What are folks' opinions on windows 8 so far? Too early to tell? I was ignoring it till I saw some good reviews and now I'm wondering if I should try to hold off on replacing my 2005 hp typewriter with a thinkpad/w7, mbp, mbair or thinkpad/w8. Or are tablets going to be the future of live? In some places now (I'm a student teacher in particular) carrying a laptop almost seems like some sentimental analog holdout thing... :/

Basically I need a new laptop for my teaching anyway. I'm guessing it will be a while before people start moving to 8 on production machines?

New versions of Windows are not developed for users, they are developed for the careers and egos of the developers who work for Microsoft. That is why they keep fixing things what ain't broke: they can't leave well enough alone.

Anyway............... http://www.windows8news.com/2011/09/17/ ... -platform/

The more professional (making a living) recording people are, the less likely they are to jump to "the Next Big Thing." Now that the DAW world is getting 64 bit, Microsoft is going to have a hell of a time getting studios to lose W7 and go to W8, since that will be 64 bit as well. I'm surprised that someone hasn't come up with a stable competitor besides MAC..... I mean, "Linux for Dummies" that could be put on any PC. There are zillions to be made.
Microsoft is in the business of torturing and conning its customers, regards the ongoing windows versions. [I'm not an MS hater, I'm a Windows hater, sort-of.]

So, I would be in no hurry to get W8 for DAW purposes. That's my 2 cents.

Why always looking for the next big thing while knowing it will be initially a path paved with problems, drivers, unsupported configurations? Did the past teach us nothing?
Get what you have, know it, use it, exploit it, enjoy it. There's so much that you can do with it right know.
Music gets better as you get better and has nothing to do with your new fancy OS or whatever.
Sorry for the rant but I simply do not understand. :|

nothing is final..
there's about a year of changing "cosmetical" issues.. and squashing bugs...

I'm pretty sure that the 'metro' would be an option in the final release
(after all it's not Apple..customization is a big part of windows)

a thought.. perhaps they want to focus on troubleshooting it (metro) first..
and it's probably going to be the biggest priority for people developing windows apps...
so they'd know what to expect from the new interface options.. new Libraries etc.
because the base kernel/platform are already there..
most of the SDK Libraries will stay the same..
except for new ones
and being it's pre-beta for developers only...

meh.. I'd wait with the judgement.. it's still too early..

it's well known that windows8 is simply windows7+workflow/gui/multitouch improvements..
windows7 has been a very smooth upgrade for me from xp (using it since beta)...vista was a nightmare..
I consider it a solid foundation..

I dunno.. if you compare the metro ui to the ipad ui..
you be the judge..

apparantly.. and os isn't easy (or fun) to develop..

today..
there are a handful of audio apps built for linux..
most commercial companies (Ableton included) see developing for linux as unnecessary manpower
and supporting linux customers is foreseen as a big big headache
there's almost no 'drivers' developed for it by hardware manufacturers too... the reasons for this I do not know..
it's probably another one of those times where 'market' f@#ks with 'growth'..

but.. +10000000 for a minimalistic simple os only for 'running apps' .. I'd go with a command prompt if it lets me run Live..
