When I go to ableton live preferences, and go to MIDI sync, the input and output section of the control surface are greyed out, and under MIDI ports there are no options. This means I can't set the Launchpad as my controller. Any help as to why this has occurred?

The APC40 would be delightful, but even with my student loan it would be a little out of my reach, epecially as I have rent/alcohol to invest in. Also, it's roughly twice as expensive, and as I've never worked with anything like this before, that's too much money to invest in something I might be ...

Been interested in getting an Ableton controller for some time, now i've got a student loan I thought I would. Having done a bit of research I thought I would ask which you guys think is the better set up for launching clips and performing live.

My second question is, if I bought the Launchpad ...
