Novation Launchpad and Korg nanaKontrol or the APC20? Help

Been interested in getting an Ableton controller for some time, now i've got a student loan I thought I would. Having done a bit of research I thought I would ask which you guys think is the better set up for launching clips and performing live.

My second question is, if I bought the Launchpad, how necessary is the Korg nanoKontrol? Doesn't the Launchpad itself come with many of the features of the nanoKontrol built in already?

The APC40 would be delightful, but even with my student loan it would be a little out of my reach, epecially as I have rent/alcohol to invest in. Also, it's roughly twice as expensive, and as I've never worked with anything like this before, that's too much money to invest in something I might be terrible at.

the nano can do alot, deeper than it looks, and launch a good bit, move up from there if you dig it

The first edition nano, which is $20 cheaper, with the Myr remote script (http://post.monome.org/comments.php?DiscussionID=5510) can do scene navigation and clip launch, I imagine somebody will eventually, or has, unbeknownst to me, created something similar for the second generation ones. So here's the thing about the mixer mode in the launchpad, it's not really that good for any real sort of control, it slides the faders and pan knobs between 8 stepped values, and you will find it really annoying having to hop over to mixer mode all the time, especially if you're using the other user modes for special functions as well. I love the Launchpad, but I have *never* used, or wanted to use it's mixer mode for anything, ever. I think you'll quickly find you want knobs and faders with a more precise range than can be achieved with the Launchpad.

To be honest having launchpad and launchpad only is pretty short fun. It`s really cool device, but we can call it single task machine. You can`t control loop in User Mode and launch clip, bring up volume in the mixer mode and play with effects in UM etc. Here comes nanoKontrol. Playing with effect on nanokontrol (Unless you need extra buttons etc. you can try to get old version, I got my for $15), launching clips on LP etc. Don`t think Launchpad is just a clip trigger, you can adjust it to make a sequncer, sound chopper, deck "sampler" and many other. Google is your friend.

Why APC 40 is so popular? It was first, it`s single device, pretty portable and comfortable,... just does the job. Great device, however I would say it` too pricey. About APC 20, I can ask only 1 question... where are knobs? ^^

well, the thing about that guy's script that is you have to use the korg kontrol editor to switch the cc's that the nanokontrol is sending, so it's default functionality would be overriden. You can easily restore that, but it would mean using the kontrol editor to restore the factory presets. When you download it, remove the 2 nanokontrol preset files and place them aside, then drop the rest of the folder into your midi remote script folder, then use the kontrol editor, and those preset files, to update the nanokontrol. Don't worry about it too much, you can easily restore it if you have problems, but it massively increases functionality for the nanokontrol once you get it up and running. It sets up scenes 1 and 2 to control mixer channels 1-8 and 9-16 respectively, in scene 3, the knobs automatically control the macro controls/device controls for whatever device is in focus, and the buttons navigate between tracks and devices, as well as being able to clip launch, with scenes selected via the transport's fwd/back buttons. All in all, it adds a whole new level of usefulness to the nanokontrol.
