The two scenarios you list seems like common sense, but "direct monitoring" gives me a weird problem:

You can create an empty project, make your mappings and save it as a template in Live's prefs.

Has anyone tried rewireing Logic/Cubase to Live (or vice versa, can't remember. :? )?
I'm thinking if Logic/Cubase runs the VC without probs you could use it as a "stand alone" host for the Virus and still run everything else in Live.
