Adding dithering plugins... i think you are making things too complicated for yourself. Are you dissatified with how Live's dither sounds? If not, then turn off the dither on the mastering plugin.

try using Portamento on the Synth (absynth) itself.
then just play new notes & the old ones should glide up or down to the new one, exactly.

you can highlight your arrangement view song, section by section, and click "capture and insert scene" under the insert menu

second line of defense against sibilants and pops would be a de-esser plugin. I think maybe there is a preset in Live7's Compressor perhaps, or maybe under racks? Or check www.kvraudio.com

This leads me to belive that there must be a midi command in the midi files/stems affecting the preset as it would for a standard GM player but I'm buggered if I can find it.

I like kraze's layering option. Try to find and keep the character elements, such as keeping the mid/high as mentioned... or maybe even use a compressor with a good attack setting to decrease the volume of everything but that short ...

time sig and tempo changes are easy in Live7, only tempo changes are easy in Live6. Check the manual.

and, yes, I'd only record a guitarist if he or she was recording at a completely different tempo than Live. Such as if I sampled a guitarist from another record, or they really sucked.

Ableton is set to EXT, as is my Korg Electibe. My midi controller (Korg microKontrol) is sending the clock.

Try using Live as the master, and slave the mikro and electribes to it. Then see if stuff improves. No Warping should be done at all... all you will need to do is adjust the sample start ...

I've used the midi mapping tool, but that only seems to let me define hardware controls to modulate Live functions. I can't figure out how to set up a virtual knob/switch etc in Live to modulate my hardware via CC to midi out.

exactly. its not voodoo, its not doing any kind of limiting or compression or fancy trickery.
