One way I find fairly useful is the highlighting the section and using the APPLE+E command for splitting it. While the new section is still highlighted press 0 (zero). it will deactivate the clip. Try out audio hi-jack... mad zach does a tutorial. it will record system audio.
Great for jacking samples from itunes/beatport, youtube or DVD like you said.
