During session recording, if I start recording into a clip by clicking on the round circle on a clip, the length of the clip is determined by when I stop recording (and the quantisation setting).

I am a beginner to but here is an idea... You can add a compressor to a return track, send all non-kick tracks to the return track, add a compressor to the return track and side chain the compressor with the kick. This way, when the kick hits, all other sounds will be compressed and kick will stand ...
