My audio interface is my X-32 mixer with X-USB card (32 ch in/out). Some weeks ago my X-USB card died - Live wouldn't recognize any audio interface anymore (I tried different USB cables and also different computers, to no avail).
So I was lucky enough to get a used and working X-USB card ...

It shouldn’t have much impact as long you don’t have any plug in on those tracks you’re not using. Easy enough to test on your end though, just keep adding tracks to your template watch the cpu meter.

You can add a limiter on the master at the beginning of your recording sessions but beware that most limiters add a lot of latency so that will affect your performances and timings. Also it colours the sound so it will effect how you are mixing as you make the track.

I've noticed random pops (very loud ones!) to appear at my X32 mixing desk on the USB source coming from my Mac Mini. When these happen, I also notice a variation on the MIDI clock output, which Live is sending out via E-RM multiclock plugin to my MultiClock.

What could the source of these ...

As you've hit the topic "limiter on the master":
- does it make sense to put a limiter already at the beginning of each tracking/recording session?
- what are the most useful settings on a limiter? Ceiling/gain/lookahead/release (are there even more?).
- I know there are plenty of different limiters ...

OK, it's solved!
I had disabled mic input on Mac OS and this is mapped to channels 1/2 so I did not get any sound.
That was it!

can you hear the signal on channels 1/2 directly from the X32? e.g. from headphones plugged directly into the X32? if you can then check your routing setup in the X32. maybe it's messed up.

if the signal seems to be fine within the X32, the next possibility is an audio driver issue on your ...

I don't know if the official support would take care of this - the X32 is for sure out of its warranty period.
