sure, there is a easier way to do this. create a new audio track. change the monitoring to "in" and then choose the channel that you want to record. you will probably need to choose master. are you using a external soundcard?

tascam VLX5's are probably the best bang for the buck. FLAT freq response as well as great power.

what up bro. i too, just picked up a bitstream. i found that if you use the user defined mode, it works well with setting up your midi mappings. definitely check out google... just type in cme bitstream reviews. you should find a SOS review about how the unit works. good luck mate!
