Decent Monitors

Got a few questions for you guys on monitors...

I'm looking to invest in a decent set of active monitors for a small studio for around £500.

Or can anyone tell me what’s good to look for in a good set of monitors.

I’ve been reading reviews and they never seam to make comparisons against each other so In unsure what's good to look for as they all seam to have different features.

Q. If a speaker says 60Hz-22Khz does this mean this is frequency range it can achieve?

Q. What is a good frequency range to go for?

Q. Is a digital connection better than XLR?

No monitor expert, but...

1. 60hz-22khz would probably be the possible range (with somewhat flat response).

2. I think a flat curve (and listening to the actual monitor) would be more valuable to strive for than a broad range on paper.

3. Don't know what a digital connection would be good for. All speakers are analog. They move actual air. To have a digital input they'd also have to house a D/A converter. This would be an unnecessary component as far as I'm concerned.

while they say 60 - 22
chances are they can go lower, but it wont ba as powerfull

no youll want to use the XLR inputs cos of noise from analog cables

in terms of frequency range, all will stop at 20/22KHz
its how low you wanna go.. 50/60 is ok, anylower and youll want a sub, but depends on the stlye of music you make

i just picked up the M-Audio BX8A Deluxe edition for $300 off ebay brand spanking new. I got lucky they retail about $500. They are top notch quality for a low price. The deluxe ones weigh about 30 pounds each but just look and sound incredible. I can hear every single sound crisp and clear. The bass is also very good too. I would recommend something like this, or something with an 8 inch woofer. Not much compares to this quality, Mackies are expensive (for me)

XLR is as analog as any other cable.

XLR might provide a balanced signal (depending on what output it's coming from), but it's still analog.

500 for the pair?

can get some resonable speakers for that...

look into the Blue Sky brand... they make small footprint systems that are extremely high quality. Genelec is cool... tannoy, dynaudio...

The speakers I have at the moment are digital

Also whats the deal with the foam mats you can get for monitors. Are these really worth all the cash?? Some of em seam pretty expensive for a piece of black sponge?

are you on about for below the monitors?
which seperate them from the stand, and so they dont vibrate or resonate

the ones behind, are to absorb bass from the monitors,
if you place them too close to the wall behind it the low frequencies can reflect back

For that price get the Adam A7 or the Genelec 8030. You won't be disappointed...

The Primacoustic Recoil Stabilizers are worth the money. As most reviews say, they really clear up the bass and makes for an all around tighter sound. Check Primacoustic's website for the physics on how it works, but I highly recommend them. But the shittier your room actually is, then the less the Recoil Stabilizers will help. Also it doesn't matter how great your monitors are, if you're in a bad room, the sound will always sound muddy, undefined, and your mixes will be pretty inaccurate.
