I'm a bit late to the party, but if you're on Windows you can try Aural Probe - I made it, it's free and has resonated quite well with a lot of people since I first released it in 2005 or something crazy like that.

Sorry to bump this again, but I didn't get any responses the first time. Does anyone else think this would be a great feature addition? In my eyes it would give Ableton Live reusable clips (akin to patterns in Trackers/MOD files), but without any of the clunky sequencing issues.

These all look fun and good, but is there any point to them beyond entertainment value? If someone released a small sequencer for the iPhone which supported samples and some basic synthesis for laying down song loop ideas, which you could then export as a collection of MIDI loops, to be imported on ...

Sorry, there are no rules to guide you - it's 100% dependent on the source material. The best advice I can give - tweak the values until it sounds good to your ears. Click + hold with the mouse on a parameter, then close your eyes/look away from the screen while you tweak.
