The sound quality in Live 5.2+ is good. However, i did an experiment recording an acoustic guitar into Tracktion and into Live, with the same mic/pre/a-d converter/mic-placement.

After listening to both takes in Live and Tracktion, i have to say i greatly prefer the sound quality of the Tracktion ...

I've been looking myself... so far i would say:

High end: RME Fireface 800 (1500 US)
It's not cheap, but it has fantastic A/D conversion, and 4 decent mic pres. Not to mention you could record an entire orchestra with this thing...

Before i invite a flogging, my request for MP3 import is not for the purposes of audio recording - of course aiff and wav are what you want when recording a master.

But for DJ purposes - where you'd like to access potentially 1000s of songs, import them, set warp markers, etc for a live set (excuse ...

There are 4 major selling features that Tracktion 2 has on Live right now:

1. 64-bit mix engine "for superb sound quality"
2. Destructive waveform editing
3. Lots of bundled plug-ins. Live could especially use a mastering plug-in like izotope Ozone. Trash and Spectron would be cool, too. (m-audio ...

Live should be able to import audio files other than WAV and AIFF, most notably MP3. All functionality - warp marking, time stretching, looping, BPM, etc. should apply.

Support formats such as MP3, AAC, Ogg, FLAC, etc. Import and Export. Compressed file formats are a must.

I've been hearing a lot about the improved audio mixing in Tracktion 2, which uses a "64-bit mix engine for superb sound quality."

I would like to use Live for the complete music creation process - recording, editing, mixing, and mastering... using various plug-ins along the way.

But how does Live ...

1. A sample editor - i'd rather not have to edit samples in yet another app.
2. FLAC output, OGG output, SDII output, MP3, AAC, etc... more options.
3. MAS and RTAS plug in support (now that Avid is the parent company,
RTAS should be possible.
