I use a FireWire 410 (DJ w/ Ableton) and a FireWire 1814 (Production). Both are tried and true, and very stable for most people including myself. There are other cards with a tad better sound quality, but I prefer stability and very flexible routing without spending $600+, so I've stuck with the 410 ...

Acer has XP drivers for about all of their notebooks, and possibly all of them. Like the poster above said, most PC notebook FireWire connections are either generic or Ricoh branded, which aren't good at all for critical audio work. Some use the Texas Instruments chipset, but not many.
