DJ's - What soundcard y'all using?

Post by yz3 » Wed May 21, 2008 6:37 pm

I got 2 1200's and a Rane 57SL. One laptop running scratch live and the other running ableton. I'm going to ditch this piece of crap usb alesis multimix mixer and need something practical but not expensive.

Can you recommend a good USB or FireWire device that Ableton will play nice with? If it makes any difference, I'd like to control each track with a line in on a mixing board at some point... so I guess I'd need firewire for that right?

i don't think a lot of people recommend the M-Audio FW410 so i won't recommend it either. but that's what i use to dj, play live, or just record outside the studio. works excellent for me. :D

The problem most people have with M-Audio is not the hardware, but the driver quality.

I use a Novation Nio 2|4 - for example this weekend see http://www.ableton.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=91760 - where I'll be using the Novation and Kent (http://lapcore.com) will be using his RME Multiface.

The Novation is great as a DJ interface, I particularly like having big fat hardware knobs for master out and headphone out. (Although you always want to run your soundcard as hot as possible. I only use it to trim sometimes when I have two tracks running that are too loud together but I don't want to change the gain on either individual track.)

I control Traktor with a FaderFox DJ2 - http://faderfox.de/html/dj2_product_page.html - which I am absolutely in love with.

I use a FireWire 410(DJ w/ Ableton) and a FireWire 1814(Production). Both are tried and true, and very stable for most people including myself. There are other cards with a tad better sound quality, but I prefer stability and very flexible routing without spending $600+, so I've stuck with the 410/1814 for quite some time. I think both of them are superb and sound really good to my ears.

fa 101 on a mac book pro. love the way I didn't need a driver. The latencys low enough to play my handsonic through vst effects - really cool for a guitar and gtr rig 3 too. Pretty happy with it so far, I'm thinking of daisy chaining a second unit so I can record 20 tracks at once ( for tracking live gigs into logic ).
