Used to use a mouse (logitech mx master2/3), but my index finger was taking a serious beating, mainly from scrolling.

Now I use a kensington slimblade trackball, with a basic autohotkey script (pc only, but there are mac equivalents).

I have the three mouse buttons on F1-3.
Left hand over the F ...

Using Rhythmic Steps, I want to trigger different patterns on the fly with midi notes, just like legato triggering midi clips that have been mapped to midi notes.


So far (and for years) I have been using the Megababy Nandymod sequencer from Reaper to do this. 8O

I haven't found a way so far ...

Those 2 solutions are easy and quick, and when such easy solutions exist there's no much need for implementing yet another solution right into e.g the External Audio Effect.
And if External Audio Effect had a ping feature, how who you trigger it anyway? With audio or an automation, or by clicking ...

External Audio Effect simply doesn't offer this feature.

yeah i know. It's baffling. and isnt forthcoming by the looks of it.


So you can either:
- use CV Triggers,
- or use an audio clip. You first record a ping from CV Triggers, and then send this signal via External Audio Effect ...

CV Triggers
The CV Triggers device sends trigger control to your drum modules.

You can choose the MIDI note you want to use to trigger the module, and select the output to use for the control voltage.

So does Live 12 have Ping in the external effect device now, like every other DAW does?

well, that's funny. The "what's new" video clearly states "see what you need".

You could try those ones .
While there's no "built in" ones, Cycling 74 also made an "Audio Route" pack, so it's kind of Ableton providing this stuff.
And if you want to go with native Live devices, just use the listen mode from the sidechain of Compressor/glue/gate :wink:

I already tried a re-install of live.

I am a long time Live user, and have been evangelical about it over the years, but yeah I've been tinkering with the competition. Fanboys won't want to hear it, but so far off the top of my head -

Multiple audio files inside clips.
This is more powerful and intuitive for creating sequences using ...

Been exploring Drift, and , well, meh. Steppy filter too. There's something stagnant about Ableton releasing a virtual analogue synth in 2023, while Bitwig has all that cool spectral split stuff, and inbuilt device fx chains.

Jokes aside, would be good if Ableton catch up with this basic facility.
