Except that the autodetection isn't quite as reliable as I'd like, and I'd still like to change the default.

I've found the solution, and it's so much more elegant than just switching a default setting. Oh, I love this program.

Any time I assign one of the controllers, I have to switch the Map Mode from Absolute to Relative (BinOffset) in the menu that appears at the foot of the screen.
