MIDI Assignment with NI 4Control
Any time I assign one of the controllers, I have to switch the Map Mode from Absolute to Relative (BinOffset) in the menu that appears at the foot of the screen. Unfortunately, I currently have to do this every time I reassign a controller, which makes Live's streamlined MIDI assignment considerably less convenient during prolonged sessions editing many different parameters with the 4Control. Is there a way of switching the default Map Mode to Relative (BinOffset)?
Thanks...

Did Relative (BinOffset) really work perfectly for you? And if so, did you ever figure out how to always use that mode?
I'm also trying to use a 4control with Live (on a Mac), with very little success. Even when I set the mode to Relative (BinOffset) and map a 4control knob to a Live knob or fader, the Live control jumps to one extreme or the other as soon as I stop turning the 4control knob. Setting the default mode is actually the least of my worries (although I can see how the inability to do that will become annoying once I solve my current problems).
I really want to get this working - I just use the computer keyboard for most stuff, but there are some things I'd like to do that require a few knobs. The 4control seems perfect if I can get it to work.

This was due to the MIDI feedback loop I had going on - remote output was enabled in preferences. Turned that off and now it works it almost perfectly. Like you said, autodetection is not entirely reliable, which is too bad.Even when I set the mode to Relative (BinOffset) and map a 4control knob to a Live knob or fader, the Live control jumps to one extreme or the other as soon as I stop turning the 4control knob.
Watching MIDI Monitor as I used the 4control the other day, I realized that the key to reliable autodetection is to turn the knobs very slowly when mapping. The faster you turn the knobs, the further from 64 are the values sent by the unit. As long as you turn slow enough to only send 63's, Live has no problems deciding that it's relative and not absolute.
This probably makes little sense to anyone not using one of these, and I think I may be the only one left, but I thought I'd post this just in case there are any others out there. It really bugged me to have to look down at that little menu and do some fine tuning every time I mapped to something.

I think he (she?) meant you don't have to use the mouse to choose the right value (Relative) from the menu. There is autodetection - if you turn the 4control knob slowly counter-clockwise, Live will guess the correct mod, often correctly.
Of course you're stoked when you find that out, then you realize what a pain it is that Live ever gets it wrong, because then you have to pay too much attention to this tiny little detail, and you're back to wishing you could just set a default.
This at least is the process I went through, and I think NineTailedFox did too. Maybe there is some even more elegant solution, in which case I will hopefully be corrected.
Even with this shortcoming, the 4control is very useful. I like to do most things with the computer keyboard, but many things you just can't do without a few knobs. 4control works very nicely for this. Let me know how it works out for you or if you need any more help.

hi,
when mapping slowly moving the knobs both counter and clockwise worked for me. The buttons are momentary however and ableton live 9 does to automatically resolve this.
