How do mp3's help? You cant record straight to an mp3, you have to encode it from wav/aiff (afaik).
Which stilll leaves you with the same problem.

Wiretap lets me record straight to mp3... my workaround at the moment is to load up my set, hit record on wiretap, play on ableton and set a timer ...

Things to try:

Make a new session and import all the tracks in

Trash all digi related prefs (digisytem init, pt prefs, dae prefs I think they are in your user prefs but may be in system) and reboot

Repair permissions/disk

Reinstall Protools

Smart - how do you find connecting h/w on a send/return loop via your soundcard? Any latency problems? I was thinking of getting a Kaoss Pad but that was one of the things putting me off. Is it easy to deal with?

No real probs, I use a spdif digital send to the lex and then use my traveller's ...

If you Rewire, can you run ProTools on the same machine as Live, using a non-ProTools-sanctioned soundcard, like RME's Multiface?

And if that's a "no," can you launch ProTools with a ProTools-sanctioned soundcard, but then Rewire ProTools through Live and use only your non-ProTools-sanctioned ...

Try using manual relink in the task window, if your tracks are all the same length you could just spot them into a new session (this won't work if you have lots of plug-ins running obviously).
