Another cheapo idea:
Speaker mount: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/SSA1375/
Just attach that to a board/surface, and pop it onto a speaker stand. Should be pretty stable. You could probably work out some way to make it tilt if you wanted also.

I'm in the same boat and am trying to save some $$. Most of the cooler laptop stands are pretty expensive. I don't really want the laptop above my keyboard and at eye level for several reasons: stability if the stand moves while I'm playing; I'd have to reach up ...

If I understand the problem completely, then wouldn't you just need to duplicate the track and have a different instrument trigger from the notes? You could also use instrument racks to have two or more instruments responding on the same track; I do this for live performance layering. For studio I'd ...

You've just given me at least three things to research, perfect ;) I've never even heard of "dummy clips", and generally have avoided clips completely.
