just updated to live 8 a week ago and im using a Macpro 2.8 Ghz and 8GB RAM. My soundcard is the Edirol Fa-101 configured to 96 Khz as a sample rate. The only VST I am using is Sylenth (which should not suck up so much CPU load)
It works fine but when I add say 6 MIDI tracks with Sylenth1 on them ...

I think your problem is with the soundcard. Even though mine shows high usage for the size of the machine, it still works fine. I also updated to Live 8 which is pretty good. Much better than the older version :) Check your soundcard settings !! or try formatting your machine and re-installing ...

Yes that is what I do. The Db setting has nothing to do with the sample rate. It is just to insure that there is no distortion. You can ofcourse pump it up from the amplifier.

I use the FA-101 and I had a similar problem. I think it depends on the Sample Rate knob that is on the device itself. Try switching to 96 Ghz and then turning off your MACBOOK. Don't restart it just simply shut it down and try again. In the audio preferences for LIVE it should be set ...
