I finally bought myself a laptop so that I can start playing shows without dragging along the 'ol mainframe. Now I'm trying to figure out the best mobile sound card to suit my needs. I've been eyeing http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/FireWire410-main.html but it's only got 2 analog inputs.

I remember seeing the same warning a week ago. Not sure what is was for.

I think I figured out it was because there was lead in the circuitry or something. I wasn't too worried.

#2 - I don't see why it would be a problem to use a split cable or midi thru port on the additional unit. Just avoid mapping the same buttons to different things or you'll start getting confused.

You can use VLC media player to transcode just about anything (DVD, internet streams, movie files).

After opening your DVD or file, go to the wizard option under the File menu. Select "transcode/save to file" and choose various audio settings. It'll take some playing ...

I'm in Guelph... Well within an hour or Toronto...

I also use live for improv/free/experimental saxophone etc.

All sound sources are acoustic, lots of processing.

A damn shame that is... Who wants to get into the custom rackmount market with me? You know, a set of wheels would make it just as portable as any laptop...

I actually did go through the list from ICMC and picked out any german schools I could find.

New idea... I think it's time for a road trip to ICMC this year.

It's my personal opinion that performing live and licensing your music to commercial interests are going to be the ways to make solid money with music.

I suppose selling merch (t-shirts etc.) would also be where it's at.

I think CC is gaining in popularity, I also think it reinforces those things.

Is disabling the other devices or changing the IRQ for the firewire port an option (BIOS maybe)? I've had IRQ issues with my desktop and I had to fiddle with windows a lot, but got it working.

I can't say that I've bought anything from a netlabel, nor do I know all that much about them. Most of my musical involvement is at a very local, independent level so when I buy music, it tends to be CDs straight from the artist.
