I'm a big beatport fan because I can just go through and preview everything - it's a great way to find new music.

I use Reaktor's vocoder and one from Waves all the time - I haven't worked with the CM Vocoder, but it should be the same. Here's how I do it:

1) Start a new set. Make sure you have one Audio track and one MIDI track.

2) To get a live feed from your mic, select "Ext. In" from the first drop down ...

With vocals I usually stick in a non-Live effect or two, but here's what I would do if I had to go strictly Live. Keep in mind that a LOT of this varies with how/where the vocals were recorded, so this is just a general guideline for what I would do with my set-up.

yeah, I often manipulate my volume automation like nuts on midi samples for vsts to get that sidechained "pulsing" sound without all the hassle :P it offers a lot more control than actually using a sidechain. if we had curves, it could sound even more awesome with half the work.
